So you decided that you want to go forward with coding or billing certification, now you ask what is the next step? The first thing you need to do is decide what coding and or billing certification course you plan to pursue. There are different certificate and training avenues available but there is one that is the industry standard when it comes to coding. This is the certification available through the AAPC or the American Academy of Professional Coders.
The AAPC is the most widely recognized coding certification body and produces many publications that are used by thousands of practices and hospitals across the country. What is the cost for this certification? The cost for this certification is dependent upon what kind of study course you need or feel inclined to prepare for. You should put aside at least $1200.00 if you plan to prepare and take this exam without going through a structured class. There are structured classes and programs that are advertised on this site. These are useful if you feel that you do not retain things that well when studying on your own.
Understanding The Coding Certification Basics
There are many other programs available through institutions that take you through coding and billing procedures and will actually prepare you for the workforce. If you have never worked in billing before, taking a coding exam will not do much in terms of preparing you for a position. The certification usually follows once you have worked in the field and actually enjoy doing so. It would always be my recommendation to first do some type of internship to find out if working in billing is really for you because it is not for everyone.
Seek An Internship
If you are someone that has worked in the medical field or currently work in the medical field, and believe that a career in coding or billing is right for you, contact your office administrator or someone you know in the office to find out about just working in the billing department for a few days. For many outgoing people, they find that a career in Medical Billing or Coding does not give them the interaction they are looking for. Remember though that every office is different but the basic procedures are the same.

Questions To Ask Yourself
- Am I attentive to detail?
- Do I mind being on the phone for long periods of time?
- Do I handle conflict well or dispute resolution?
- Am I efficient on the computer?
- Do I NEED interaction with people on a daily basis?
- Can you function well under pressure?
- Can I work independently or do I prefer a team atmosphere?
- Do I prefer to move around a lot during my work day or can I sit still in front of a computer?
There is not a right answer to these questions because there are many facets to a billing department. BUT if you feel strongly that you are an extreme extrovert, then you may want to do something that involves more interaction with those around you.
